Position Summary

Next Up is a nonpartisan nonprofit that mobilizes diverse young people to move Oregon forward through issue advocacy, youth leadership development, and civic engagement. We envision an Oregon where young people boldly lead the state forward, our democracy is inclusive and accessible, and our communities are strong and resilient. We’re Next Up, and we want you to join us! ✨

This year we are bringing direct voice and direct vote to all Portlanders through the Community Budgeting for All campaign. The measure would create a binding vote for Portlanders to decide how to spend 2% of the city’s budget in order to amplify community priorities and create better lives.

Campus Signature Gatherers will be in charge of reaching out to your peers at your school (or outside of it) to gather signatures for Community Budgeting for All. You'll learn about ballot measures, community building, leadership skills, and signature gathering, all while making a huge impact!

Logistics

Position Title

Campus Signature Gatherer

Compensation

$21/hour, up to 5 hours a week. This is a temporary, part-time position.

Duration

This position is helping us qualify for the November ballot. Temporary, part-time, hourly position with weekday, some evening and weekend work required. The position runs from May 13th - June 14th

Location

Hybrid. There will be online training and check-ins with optional in person training. Signature gatherings will take place at your school and in your communities! A cell phone or laptop will be needed to phone bank and join meetings.

SCHEDULE

Flexible hours, choose your own hours with an emphasis on signature gathering during times when students are out and about.

covid-19

We require all team members to be vaccinated for COVID-19 unless a team member has requested and received a health/disability or religious accommodation. For in-person meetings - applicants must follow all in-person covid protocols outlined by the organization (such as masking, and regular covid-19 testing).

responsibilities

Signature Gathering and Recruitment

  • Attend orientation training and online weekly check-ins.

  • Host a weekly signature gathering event at your school. This includes recruiting friends and peers to signature gatherings, giving a short training at the beginning of your event, and getting students signed on to the initiative. We will provide an event platform for people to RSVP.

  • Pick up blank signature sheets and return completed ones to the campaign through the mail, campaign events, or dropboxes weekly. 

  • Connect with Portland voters ages 18 - 29 to inform them of the measure and ask them to sign the petition.

qualifications

  • Currently attend a Portland, Oregon high school or college.

  • Commitment to Next Up and Next Up Action Fund's mission, with an appreciation for the role of electoral justice in social change and movement building.

  • Excited to support Community Budgeting for All and expand the voice and vote of all Portland residents – especially communities that have been disinvested in like Black, Indigenous, people of color, young, low-income, immigrant and refugee. 

  • You are interested in expanding your analysis and knowledge about the role that racial inequity plays in our society, and are committed to building and deepening your commitment to racial justice work.

  • Strong time management, problem solving, organizational skills and follow through on projects to meet goals.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage many audiences -- specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.

  • Access to reliable transportation, a laptop, cell phone/phone, and wifi.
